Lodge of Honour February 2025 Meeting: Membership, Tracing Boards, Gong & Cake
Our February meeting marked the beginning of a truly historic year for the Lodge of Honour, as we commenced our Bicentenary Celebrations. Founded on 23rd February 1825, the Lodge will officially reach its 200th anniversary in just over a week’s time. To honour this milestone, we began our celebrations with a special presentation by our esteemed Past Master, followed by an unforgettable evening at the festive board.
Membership Challenge: What’s Next?
One of the highlights of the evening was the visit from the Assistant Provincial Grand Master of Somerset, accompanied by the Provincial Team, to deliver a follow-up presentation on the Membership Challenge: What’s Next?
This session built upon the discussions we had a year ago, focusing on membership growth, retention, and engagement. The presentation provided an opportunity to reflect on the progress we’ve made and explore new strategies for the future. Key points raised included:
- Enhancing the interview process for prospective members to ensure alignment with our values.
- Improving retention efforts by fostering a deeper sense of connection and involvement.
- Engaging with the wider community to raise awareness of Freemasonry and encourage new membership.
- Increasing the number of social events to create opportunities for fellowship outside of lodge meetings.
- Utilizing the Membership Pathway and Planning tools for structured recruitment and retention strategies.
The discussion was well-received, sparking insightful conversations at the festive board later in the evening.
A Brief History of the Lodge’s Tracing Board
Following this, Worshipful Brother Mike Scaggs, a knowledgeable and well-respected Past Master, delivered a fascinating historical presentation on the Lodge of Honour Tracing Boards. These remarkable artifacts date back to the founding of the Lodge itself, except for one that was replaced after World War II.
Stored in the basement for many years, these Tracing Boards were seldom seen by members. In a special moment, they were brought into the temple for display, allowing brethren to appreciate their significance.
Brother Scaggs also spoke about the Lodge of Honour Gong, a long-standing symbol of our traditions, which is now housed in the Lodge Museum. Additionally, he directed members’ attention to our Centenary Warrant, an important piece of our Lodge’s history.
The effort to retrieve and display these artifacts was a truly memorable moment, bringing a tangible connection to our rich heritage. We cover our presentation of the history of the Lodge’s Tracing Board in our article – The Tracing Boards of the Lodge of Honour, Bath.

The Somerset Travelling Trowel: A Symbol of Masonic Friendship
We were honoured to receive the Somerset Travelling Trowel, presented by Brethren of Columbanus Lodge No. 9941, led by their Senior Warden. The Travelling Trowel is more than just a ceremonial item, it is a symbol of fraternal connection and goodwill between lodges.
As part of this tradition, we will now assemble a contingent of our own brethren to pass the Trowel onward at the Somerset Masters’ Lodge meeting in Keynsham on 24th February 2025. This gesture strengthens our bonds with fellow lodges and encourages visiting between brethren—a fundamental aspect of Masonic fellowship.
The meeting was a very enjoyable occasion with some good interaction and feedback from those present, followed by a well spirited and lively Festive Board!

A Memorable Festive Board
Following the formal proceedings, we gathered for an enjoyable three-course meal at the festive board. In keeping with the celebratory spirit, we were treated to a special dessert prepared by one of our own members. More on this in the next section.
The discussion on membership continued, with the Provincial Team engaging informally with brethren, exchanging ideas on how we can enhance our lodge experience and attract new members. The atmosphere was warm and lively, setting the tone for a promising year ahead.
Lodge of Honour is a wonderful, friendly Lodge and you have all worked very hard to get to your 200 year milestone. I am sure that with some planning and careful recruitment and retention, the Lodge can grow again and celebrate being 250 years old in 2075!!”

A Sweet Lodge Tradition Every February
Over the years, it has become a cherished tradition in the Lodge of Honour to celebrate our February meetings with cake, bringing a touch of warmth and festivity to the occasion. This year, in recognition of our Bicentenary, the brethren were treated to an impressive four-tier cake, meticulously handcrafted by Mrs. Aziz.
Adorned with numbered candles displaying “200”, the cake stood as a fitting tribute to our Lodge’s long and distinguished history. As the candles flickered, the brethren joined in a rousing rendition of “Happy Birthday” to the Lodge, filling the room with camaraderie and good spirits. The Worshipful Master then performed the honour of blowing out the candles and making the ceremonial first cut.
Following the tradition, the cake was carefully portioned and served by Shay and the brethren, ensuring that everyone could enjoy a slice. Paired with coffee and chocolate to finish, the indulgent treat was a delightful conclusion to the evening.
This simple yet meaningful tradition continues to bring brethren together, reinforcing the bonds of fellowship and celebrating the rich legacy of the Lodge of Honour.
